A good book is an event in my life.

March 3, 2013

A good book is an event in my life.

Almost every book I read has an impact on me, some more than others. For instance, I remember when I read Gone With the Wind for the first time. I was absolutely enthralled by it. Being given that book, with its grey, battered 1930s hardbound cover and its thin, yellowing pages, was an event in my life. I have never been the same since. (Thanks for stopping at that yard sale Mom!)

I could also say the same for hundreds of other books. As a child when I read Tuck Everlasting, The Phantom Tollbooth, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and the Chronicles of Narnia series, each of those times could definitely be described as events in my life.

More times than I could count, I’ve finished the last page of a book, shut it, and sighed, feeling like Something Important has just happened. What that Something is, it’s hard to say sometimes.
