A moment.

Shaken, I stopped short as I walked into my living room.

Only a few minutes had passed since I left the room to put a load of clothes in the washing machine. But as I stood in the doorway, suddenly viewing the moment from a distance of years, I stood frozen with awe at the life I’ve created. Young-me lived in a chaotic, unstable world and didn’t feel any reasons to hope for a peaceful or secure future. Young-me lived with fear, confusion, hopelessness. She looked through present-me’s eyes and was so overwhelmingly surprised and grateful at what she saw that it broke both our hearts.

I felt such a powerful feeling of gratitude and awe that for a  moment all I could do was stare, astonished, with tears in my eyes and a smile on my lips. Nothing to do but bend and pat the dogs who’d run to greet me with wagging tails and hopeful eyes, run a hand along the spines of my books on the shelf, and cross the rug to kiss my fiance on the cheek as he sat and played and sang at the piano.

In many ways this moment was the most serene, calm, and joyful of my life.

The Liebster Award

liebster award

I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award-thanks, In Which I Have A Blog and Jade’s Jungle, who both nominated me! I’ve been busy with school and just realized I never got around to posting this when I was first nominated. Now that it’s summer I hope to be able to stay more on top of things. Thanks again for the nominations! 🙂

The Rules of the Award:

1. Post eleven facts about yourself.

2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you and create eleven questions for people you’ve nominated.

3. Choose eleven people (with fewer than 200 followers) to give this award to and link them in your post.

4. Go to their page and tell them.

5. Remember, no tag backs.

I like these awards because it’s a good way to encourage people to keep blogging, and bring attention to new blogs. Plus, all the questions remind me of those chain letter quizzes we used to email each other all the time when I was a teenager (before facebook!).

Eleven Facts About Me:

1. I recently learned to play chess and I love it.

2. I’ve read the Harry Potter series at least ten times (probably more, but let’s go with ten).

3. I’ve never broken a bone.

4. I love traveling. I’ve traveled to most areas of the U.S. but never traveled abroad. I especially love road trips.

5. I read a lot. Concerned adults sometimes wondered if I “read too much” as a kid. They thought I needed to go out and get some fresh air, to which I replied, “That’s why I sometimes read up in a tree.”

6. I have a black lab/border collie mix named Ace, who I absolutely adore. I love all dogs, to tell the truth.

7. When I hear a song I like, I can listen to it over and over and not get tired of it (I only do this if no one else is around, of course).

8. I chose my own first name.

9. I loved building blanket forts as a kid. I still sometimes have an urge to make one.

10. I love the ocean but don’t live near it, sadly.

11. I’m majoring in biology and I find basically everything to do with cells, evolution, genetics, etc. to be absolutely, endlessly fascinating.

Questions from In Which I Have A Blog:

1. Zombies or Vampires?  As far as entertainment goes, I’ll take zombies over vampires any day. 🙂  But if we’re talking about becoming one or the other, I’d rather be a vampire.

2. What is your least favourite vegetable? Lettuce. I like all vegetables, but I don’t really enjoy eating lettuce salads.

3. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Flying, definitely.

4. If you could have any mythical creature as a pet, what would it be? Hippogriff–useful for transportation and attacking enemies.

5. What is the weirdest dream you have ever had? I once had a dream that I was living in some kind of orphanage place where they wouldn’t feed us, so I escaped with a few other orphans and we drove off in a red convertible. I don’t usually remember my dreams in much detail, but this one was really vivid and detailed.

6. Do you have an imaginary friend? No, I did when I was a kid, though.

7. Who is your favourite philosopher? That’s a tough one. I’ll go with Descartes.

8. What is your favourite thing to collect? BOOKS! And shot glasses.

9. What is your favourite book and why? It’s funny-I wrote a blog post not too long ago about how this is always a tricky question for me. I’ll go with The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It’s beautifully written and the characters and story are hauntingly memorable. Also, it’s narrated by Death, so that’s cool.

10. What was your favourite film as a child? Beauty and the Beast because I wanted the library. Shocking, I know.

11. What would you do in the event of an apocalypse? Have a panic attack and probably die soon after? I mean, how many survival skills do I really have? Let’s be honest here.
